Armed with a business degree from Stanford University, a wild imagination and a sense for adventure, Walter Drake moved to Colorado Springs in 1947 and started in earnest on what has become a nationally known mail order company, Walter Drake & Sons. Walter Drake, a graduate of Stanford University, inherited a solid business background from his father who had been co-founder of the Hupmobile Corporation.
Walter owned and operated the company for 50 years. He retired in 1997 and ran a cattle ranch in eastern Colorado, raised bonsai plants, orchids, and enjoyed time with family and friends. He was loved by many for his love of nature, quick wit, and sense of humor. Mr. Drake passed away in March 2002.
In the beginning, Walter advertised his "Tommy Turtle" pen-pal letters in House Beautiful and Harper’s magazines. The business also consists of two other very successful titles, Directions, The Path to Better Health and the Walter Drake Christmas Card Catalog.
Today, Walter Drake is a leading direct marketer of low to mid-priced, value-oriented merchandise, offering unique and functional products in household goods, kitchen products, general merchandise, personal care products and specialty, personalized paper goods and Christmas cards. Many of Walter Drake’s products are personalized free – from Baby Booties to Bath Plaques; the line of merchandise consists of products not easily found in retail stores. In 2003, Walter Drake mailed over 50 million catalogs nationwide with sales reaching over $70 million.
